How to Spot Health Fraud
Learn the techniques used to promote fraudulent medical treatments. This article from the
Federal Drug Administration uses three products recently cited by the FDA to illustrate
typical claims. If it sounds too good to be true, there are suggestions from the FDA of

Nursing Home Checklist
Print out this five-page checklist and fill one out for each nursing home you are
considering. It's a good way to organize information that indicates nursing home quality
that you can use for comparison between different facilities. The "Useful Tips"
in each section are particularly helpful.
Nursing Home Compare
Search the Health Care Financing Administration's National Nursing Home Database. Enter
the zip code or state where you're looking for a nursing home and you will get a list of
nursing homes located there. You'll also get some basic information about each nursing
home and the results of the most recent state inspection. You can get the telephone
numbers for the Long Term Care Ombudsman, the State Survey Agency, and the State Health
Insurance Assistance Program for any state by clicking on the "Phone Directory"
tab at the top of the page.

This official U.S. government Web site for people with Medicare. Find information on
nursing homes, includes choosing them, paying for them, inspections and patients' rights.
Try the "Nursing Home Compare" feature. Health information and Medicare fraud
information are offered. You can also download pamphlets about different aspects of
Medicare ("Educational Materials" under "Medicare Health Plans"). If
you're considering "gap" insurance, look at the "Medigap Compare"

Social Security Online
The latest information on Social Security from the official Web site of the Social
Security Administration. You can request a social security statement, replace your
card, estimate your retirement benefit, look at schedules of benefits payments, find your

Elserhostel is the nation's first and the world's largest education and travel
