200.400 Employment - Temporary

1. Temporary employment is limited-term employment of a non-employee to fill a position which is temporarily vacant or to fill a limited-term staffing need.

2. All temporary employment shall be for a time period specifically designated by the Director and may be extended beyond the designated time period only by the Director.

3. Normal District hiring procedures need not be followed in hiring temporary employees as temporary employment does not lead to regular employment status.

4. Temporary employees appointed for less than six complete months will be evaluated after two months service and upon termination from employment. Those appointed for a longer term will be evaluated according to normal District procedures.

5. A temporary employee shall receive the normal rate of pay for the position and those employee benefits required by law.

6. A temporary employee hired for 3-6 months in a 20-40 hour per week position will:

a. accrue sick leave.

b. participate in the Public Employees Retirement System if hired into an eligible position.

7. Temporary employees whose position is extended beyond six months or hired for six months or more will receive all other employee benefits appropriate to the position.

8. A temporary employee may be terminated with or without cause and without the right of hearing, after being given one full day’s notice prior to the effective date of termination or equal pay in lieu of notice. An employment termination may be done at the option of the District at a date other than that stated when the employee was originally hired.
