400.500 Leave Without Pay

   1.   Leave without pay, to a maximum of 12 months, may be granted by the Director upon approval of an employee’s when such leave will not operate to the detriment of the service of the Library District.

   2.   Leave without pay will be granted only after all vacation leave has been exhausted.

   3.   Condition of Leave:  Leave without pay will be considered for the following circumstances:

         a.   Continuing education opportunities.

         b.   Military leave in excess of fifteen (15) days, as described in section 400.315, “Military Training Leave.”

         c.   Care of domestic partner, grandparent, or the parent of a spouse.

         d.   Extended medical or family leave.

         e.   Employees not eligible for family or medical leave.

         f.    Other unusual circumstances requiring an absence.

   4.   Leave without pay should be requested in writing as far in advance as possible and expected duration must be indicated.

   5.   No benefits accrue during a leave without pay which exceeds five (5) days duration, and the employee’s anniversary date will be adjusted by the length of the leave.

   6.   Eligible employees will be responsible for group health and life insurance premiums, unless otherwise required by State or Federal law.  Payments will be made to the District by the first of the month.  Insurance benefits will be terminated if there is failure to pay premiums.

   7.   At the Director’s sole, an employee may be allowed (1) to return either to his/her original position or (2) to the next available position for which the employee is qualified at the end of the leave of absence.  The decision depends upon the particular position in question, the length of the leave, and the operational requirements of the District.

   8.   Leave without pay may be granted under other circumstances as required by State or Federal law.
