STEVENS COUNTY RURAL LIBRARY DISTRICT BOARD OF TRUSTEES

 COLLECTION POLICY STATEMENT

Rescinded - Replaced by Policy 0014 Collection Development

The collection policy of the Stevens County Rural Library District will follow the following format. This format will be presented in three strands and will be the guiding principals when making initial and subsequent collection selections.

1.      It will provide a base or foundation collection for each community library and library station to consist of materials that should be found in all public libraries. These will be items of need for both resident librarians and customers alike. Examples of such material include the Reader's Guide to Periodic Literature, Dictionaries, and other standard reference texts.

2.      It will provide materials that will fulfill the library's three service roles of life long learning, reference, and a traditional browsing collection of fiction and non-fiction materials.

3.      It will be responsible to the needs of the community and responsive to county's demographics. Initial needs assessments completed during the spring '97 public meetings led to the service roles and an initial collection focus. As libraries are established surveys will be taken of local customers to determine local needs and desires. These needs and desires will be observed and acted upon during all following collection additions. Committees of local citizens will be informed in each community served by community libraries or library stations to provide local guidance on collection policy.
