Morgan Park History Program
Now look where the smoke stack is located. It appears that the stack has moved to the middle of the boat. That change can be explained with the help of a newspaper article from the Spokane Daily Chronicle from August 15, 1900. It told about the purchase, then said "the boat will be cut in two and lengthened 15 feet. This will make her 45 feet over all and enable her to carry 50 passengers." Oddly, the following spring, the Chronicle said the steamer at Loon Lake was capable of accommodating 100 passengers. Much of the advertising of the time also suggests the Gwen could carry 100.
Taking excursions on the lake was a very popular activity of the campers visiting Morgan Park. The cruise around the lake cost 25 cents.
